More about the tour
The water mill lies in the valley of the stream Čremošná, in the picturesque village of Kováčová close to Rožňava, within reach of the Zádiel Valley and near the Drieňovec Rock in the Slovak Karst National Park. The mill, which once belonged to a famous Andrássy family of Krásná Hôrka, is today a unique technical monument with its original equipment preserved.
During the tour spread over three floors, you will not only hear but also see how flour was produced in the past. You will learn the story of the miller and his family, who lived and worked here until nationalization in 1950. The exhibition includes everyday objects and items of folk art, such as pottery, ceramics, wickerwork, and metalwork, as well as embroidery and other pieces from the Gemer region.
At the mill, there is a functional water wheel with a diameter of 5 meters, powered by water flowing through a 30-meter-long wooden trough, which you can view up close. In the past, the wheel powered not only the milling machines but also the hemp breaker, which women used for processing hemp. The restored hemp breaker at the mill is the only one of its kind in Slovakia.
In a separate room, you can also see an exhibition of traditional hemp processing, along with woven products such as flour sacks, rugs, towels, and tablecloths. The exhibition includes various tools used in producing hemp threads, all the way to looms used for weaving.
Visitors can try the oldest method of grinding on millstones and experience manual milling firsthand.
After such an interesting journey into the past, you can enjoy a small refreshment—coffee, hot chocolate, homemade lemonades, drinks on tap, ice cream, or a light snack—and relax on the terrace in the pleasant garden surroundings.
